The Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists presents “Diversity in the D” a Town Hall forum on Tuesday, July 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at City Theatre, 2301 Woodward Ave., inside the Hockeytown Café in downtown Detroit. The town hall is sponsored by Ilitch Holdings, Inc.
 

The panel of city officials, business leaders, newsmakers and media personalities will explore efforts in Detroit to increase and maintain diversity in all areas of Detroit’s civic, professional and business life as well as in the media as we mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the Kerner Commission report.

Funds raised will support the TAP NABJ mentoring program and the NABJ scholarship fund designed to help members struggling from job loss, personal issues and other tragic events.

Dr. King’s Legacy: Civil Rights Then & Now

NABJ hears from gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on her historic journey and attorney Benjamin Crump on litigating cases of black men killed by police and the social impact. As well, an esteemed group of panelists partake in a conversation on taking up the social justice mantle in King’s legacy.

With this year marking the 50th anniversary of the Kerner Commission and the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., NABJ celebrates King’s great legacy with a new generation of journalism and media professionals. Thought leaders in civil rights compare and contrast past and present day efforts while amplifying King's message of hope, unity, equity, and civil rights.

The conference is hosting a Day of Entrepreneurial Service, where some of the organization's top journalists and public relations professionals offer guidance to small businesses and non-profits on how to brand themselves, handle social media and conduct press interviews. The event will open with a panel discussion about what makes a successful relationship with the media, followed by short sessions on branding and social media -- and how to successfully get your story in the news.

The event will help participants craft press releases, participate in mock interviews and provide tools necessary to position their companies and missions for increased media coverage.
